The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) exists to fulfill President Lincoln’s promise “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans.

The Veterans Affairs National Diversity Internship Program (NDIP) provides a career opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students from diverse socioeconomic and cultures backgrounds to assist VA in accomplishing its mission while gaining valuable work experience. Students from Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), and underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

Students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen (a lawful permanent resident or otherwise legally eligible to work in the United States)
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education
  • Be in good academic standing (or within six months after graduating)
  • Have an interest in working with the federal government
  • Be able to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of the internship
  • Be able to pass a background investigation


Program Components

Students’ career interests, matched with their skills, knowledge and abilities are placed on-site at a VA headquarters or field facility located across the United States. Task assignments include but are not limited to project assignments, attending seminars, workshops, training sessions and field trips. The VA assigns a Mentor to each intern who interacts with and provides guidance on project tasks and assignments. The VA NDIP sessions are 10 – 15 weeks long.

  • Summer session is 10 weeks from June to August
  • Spring session is 15 weeks from January to May
  • Fall session is 15 weeks from September to December


Program Benefits

Interns receive bi-weekly stipend payments and, if needed, round trip transportation to the internship site, Housing will be provided at the internship location for non-local interns. Stipend amounts vary and are based on the educational level of the student. Interns will:

  • Advance the mission of the VA and serve America's veterans
